As Rory's 21st birthday approaches, both Lorelai and Rory are saddened that their estrangement will keep them from spending the day the way they had always planned. Richard tries to convince Lorelai to help him concoct a plan to get Rory to return to Yale, but Lorelai insists that Rory has to make the decision herself. Meanwhile, Emily plans an elaborate birthday party. Later, Emily and Richard are shocked when they realize that Rory and Logan have been having sex. Former Secretary of State MADELEINE ALBRIGHT appears in a cameo role as herself.

On the eve of Rory's graduation, Emily and Richard host a party and perform a song in her honor. At the fete, Lorelai and Christopher (recurring guest star DAVID SUTCLIFFE) reunite for the first time since their separation, and both are relieved to find that they can still be friends. Logan surprises everyone by proposing marriage to Rory--but she is too shocked to give him an answer and begs Lorelai to help her decide what to do. On graduation day, Rory and Paris receive their diplomas, and Rory finally gives Logan her answer. Meanwhile, Lorelai is embarrassed about her recent karaoke serenade to Luke, and he is hurt when he overhears her saying it didn't mean anything.

When Jessica (Angela Lansbury) is arrested for murder, secret agent Michael Haggerty (Len Cariou) and her nephew Grady (Michael Horton) conspire to keep her safely in jail while they seek the real killer.

A murder occurs at Jessica's nephew's (Michael Horton) wedding. Bill Macy, Howard Morris and Gale Storm guest star.

Jessica (Angela Lansbury) invests in a trendy New York restaurant where murder is apparently on the menu. Guest stars: Brenda Vaccaro, Sonny Bono and Norman Fell.
