Pilots Guld Goa Bowman and Isamu Dyson are still fighting over the affections of the same woman, Myung, but Myung has plenty of problems of her own. The "virtual idol" she created, computer-generated pop star Sharon Apple, has become aware of her artificial nature and has discovered a way to exist as a sentient being. Unable to control her creation, Myung opts to return to earth.
Hibiki returns to earth in one piece, and has brought with him the mysterious Ishtar. With battles raging above and on Earth, Hijiki tries to protect Ishtar from enemy forces.
Hibiki takes Ishtar to the ancient Macross, where she tells him the true identity and desitny of the ship. Together, they fly to the Moon where a supposably peaceful music festival turns into a chaotic battle where Hibiki and Ishtar must fight for survival.
